Street Pastors Street Pastors is an idea set up by the Ascension Trust, and run in conjunction with local churches, the police and the local council. The scheme is now in operation in more than 120 UK towns and boroughs, and was officially launched in Eastbourne in July 2009. Street Pastors will walk the streets of the town centre between about 10pm and 3am on Friday and Saturday nights. They work in teams of six people, and wear a blue uniform to identify them, and to show that they are ready to help wherever needed They will try to engage with people, to care and to listen. Where the scheme has been established for a while, the very presence of Street Pastors has seen a significant reduction in the levels of crime. The public have warmed to them and feel safer since their arrival on the streets. There are currently 30 trainee Street Pastors for Eastbourne. These are Christians who have a heart for the people in their community, and who are preparing to start patrols this winter. Keep a look out for them. The Church has left the building...! A book which highlights the birth and growth of the Street Pastors initiative in the UK is about to be published. In just six years, over 125 Street Pastor teams have been established to serve their communities all over the UK, with more than 3,000 Christians involved. Hope for Eastbourne News Winter 2009
